The Black Hole Finder project represents a noteworthy initiative in citizen science, focusing on the discovery of black holes, especially those formed by the merger of neutron stars. Participants can engage in this pioneering research from their own homes, utilizing a smartphone, tablet, or computer.

This innovative app offers users the opportunity to explore astronomical phenomena at their fingertips. When two neutron stars collide, they trigger significant events that generate gravitational waves detectable by advanced instruments, which in turn may indicate the formation of black holes. Additionally, such collisions are responsible for the creation of rare Earth elements like iodine, gold, and cerium—elements that are essential for various processes critical to life.

In conjunction with gravitational waves, these cosmic events also produce light signals. The project employs a set of specially designed BlackGEM telescopes located in Chile to pursue these transient signals. However, due to the inherent limitations of the detectors that provide only a general localization of events and the ephemeral nature of the light signals, prompt action is required to capture these fleeting phenomena before they dissipate.

Participants can play an integral role by utilizing the app to analyze real-time images captured by the BlackGEM telescopes. This task involves identifying potential light signals associated with new black holes. With appropriate training, contributors may also be capable of guiding telescopes for further observations of noteworthy astronomical objects.

Importantly, the contributions made by participants will be recognized in the scientific community. Those who make significant discoveries may be offered co-authorship on resulting publications. The project also provides extensive training and support to enhance participants' understanding of cosmic science.

Ultimately, the Black Hole Finder project transcends mere scientific contribution; it fosters engagement with the complexities of the universe and promotes educational enrichment while encouraging a sense of enjoyment in exploration.
